Individualized education program

§           What is IEP?

IEP stands for individualized education Program, which refers to a carefully designed, objectively evaluated Program to meet the special education needs of an individual child. Individual programs for special children help educators to ensure that these children’s are making progress in school.  Well written individual Programs also help a teacher to systematically structure and sequence learning in specially targeted areas. This is not to say that everything children learn to school will or should be included in an individual plan. Rather individual programs provide a focuses point for the main emphasis of a child’s learning over a specified period of time used properly they can be an excellent aid to teaching on a daily basis.

Values or purposes of IEP?

The purposes of IEP are following:-

  • some degree of accountability for teachers to meet the needs of the individual child.
  • adequate communication among all persons within the school and home concerning the child.
  • reducing the deficiency in the child developing competency of the child in the focused area.
  • behavior modification and developing the adaptive behavior of the child.

Who’s Responsibility? 


IEP is a very complex process. It is not the responsibility of any single person. Just as successful inclusion depends upon a numbers of persons who are concerned with the welfare of the child with special needs, so IEP involves a group of persons. It is the joint responsibility of this group of professionals who constitute the IEP team.

Components of IEP

  • There are following components of IEP:-
  • A Statement of the present level of performance of the child,
  • A statement of annual goals including short term objective for the child,
  • A statement of the specific educational services to be provided to each child and the extent to which each child will be able to participate in regular education program,
  • The projected date for anticipated duration of such services.
